Separation Appraisal

What is a separation appraisal?
Once the decision to separate from a spouse has been made, it is crucial to have all assets professionally appraised to ensure a fair and equitable division. It is essential for the involved accountants, lawyers, or mediators to inform the appraisal firm of the specific dates to be used in the valuation, such as the “date of separation”. If the separation is being settled in a court of law, the appraiser must prepare the report in accordance with the specifications outlined in the Supreme Court Family Rules.
The appraiser’s role is strictly neutral and cannot advocate for either party.
The appraiser must be qualified as an expert and must adhere to the above guidelines, including serving as an expert witness if required.
